Summary

The King County Executive's Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget (PSB) is hiring eight (8) summer interns to work with several different teams within the office.
 Interns will gain a firsthand understanding of the branches of government and how they interact with each other, get an overview of how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented, understand why civic engagement matters, and build an appreciation for the importance of public service in its many forms from elected officials, to staff, to stakeholders, to clients, and the economy/environment. ABOUT THE OFFICE 
 
The Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) is in the Executive department of King County government. It serves as a resource to the County's departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, business plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. King County is seeking a thoughtful and intellectually curious student intern (completion of two (2) years or more higher education studies) to provide analytical and financial consulting in support of King County agencies and the Executive Office. The Physical Environment Intern will join the Budget Team in the Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB) and report to an Executive Analyst. The Budget Team is a group of about 25 analysts and managers who have a unique role supporting agencies, advising decision-makers, and coordinating a budget process where technical analysis, public policy, and politics meet. More specifically, this position will be part of the Physical Environment team, which provides policy and budget support to Metro Transit, the Department of Natural Resources and Parks, and the Department of Local Services.

Job Duties

The Intern’s body of work will include some of the following items: 
 

  • Supporting both the Environmental and the Equity Budget Review Teams; tracking a high volume of budget proposals, coordinating equity and environmental analysis, and providing project management support. 
  • Conducting analysis and research for leadership briefings related to other priority investments.
  • Supporting the budget review process for the Water & Land Resources Division, particularly related to the Land Conservation Initiative. 
  • Providing support to the Budget Team, as needed, including crosschecking and editing fiscal analysis, memos, budget materials, legislation, and more.
Specific assignments will be based, in part, on the skills and interests of the selected candidate.

  • Pursuing a degree in public policy/administration, finance, economics, business, or a related field in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program. 
  • Demonstrated work ethic, ability to get things done, and independent time management skills.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to new situations while working in a multi-faceted and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to innovate, embrace data, and solve problems. 
  • Talent for working with partners and stakeholders to address issues collaboratively.

Note: we will be considering both undergraduate and graduate student candidates for this opportunity. Undergraduate candidates must have at least two years of higher education completed.

TELECOMMUTING: 
This position will work a hybrid of in-person (on-site) and telework, depending on operational need. Interns will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
 
Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule will be Monday-Friday.  The workweek will consist of a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 40 hours.  These are summer internships expected to last from mid-June to mid-August, although the position may begin earlier or end later depending on project and scheduling needs.
